“New Growth, New Perspective.” I have always b “New Growth, New Perspective.” I have always been drawn to painting sinuous shapes; roots, trees, veins. Our bodily connection to the earth. I’ve revisited this subject again, but this year, tomorrow will be my first Mother’s Day. I think about where I’ve been and now where I’m going. I want to introduce you my most important work. Her name is Lucy. The reason for my absence but now my new perspective for everything. I wonder how she sees the world, I hope it is beautiful.

Trying some new things under mentorship with @marcgrandbois A limited palette of green gold, quinacridone magenta, pthalo blue and French ultramarine. I also pre-mixed a cool and a warm white. It took about 20 minutes for the light to disappear, but I was inspired. It’s been a while since I was outside and I’m worried about the warm streak we’re about to have. Will there be any snow left to paint?

Town Gossip. Painting in a busy Cafe during the no Town Gossip. Painting in a busy Cafe during the normally quiet Siesta. A Coruña Galicia (Spain).
Town Gossip. A Coruña, Galicia (Spain). We visite Town Gossip. A Coruña, Galicia (Spain). We visited the Old town right around the siesta time where generally no-one is open for lunch. We managed to find this Cafe that served fresh orange juice and typical Spanish tortilla. It was bustling with a group of older ladies having a heated chat! I was enamored with the beautiful interior and asked permission from the owner to paint while I had my coffee. I just love the way that people talk with their hands and couldn’t help but put in one of the many hand gestures. The drama reminded me of Caravaggio’s “The Calling of Saint Matthew”. The small town feel was like being in Gilmore Girls. 😂

Thank you again to Marcos for capturing the moment, and to Julia for the inspiration. For this Plein air I made a choice to combine the feel of the moment with the structure of the view over copying the darkness in front of me. I’ve learned from my mentors that sometimes we can push the boundaries and play beyond reproducing the exact scene. Swipe to see shots from the start of my 30 minute painting, and the quick digital edit before I began. #playaderazo🌅 #playaderazo #razobeach #galicia

I ended up observing and painting from the rental car while it poured. Return from the waves. Razo Beach, Spain. Usually Return from the waves. Razo Beach, Spain. Usually in Galicia it is rainy, but yesterday was a perfect day at the beach for surfers. I happily sold this Plein air fresh off the easel to the surfer featured in this scene! It’s amazing watching them brave the waves especially when the weather can change so quickly. I had to run for cover about 30 minutes in when the sky opened up and it poured. That doesn’t stop the “seals” though. 🏄‍♂️ Swipe to see my happy customer, and a shot of the surfers.

(Day 26) Mcintosh Study: Ground colour & Over colo (Day 26) Mcintosh Study: Ground colour & Over colour. Did you know that apples are evaluated in colour with three categories? Overall appearance, ground colour, and over colour. I was really amused by the idea that I I started my underpainting with a lemon yellow hue (greenish yellow) and layered my other primaries of reds and blues on top. It happens to be that Red McIntosh apples follow the same layering. Yellow-green ground, and red overcolour! It just seemed right that lemon yellow would work well as a harmonious ground for the rest of the painting. What an apple-ing coincidence! 🤣 🍎 #stradaeasel #stradaeaselday26 #applefarm #applepicking #ottawaartist #ottawa

Since becoming interested in Mycology, I’ve taken to painting and drawing the mushrooms that I find to help me learn. I’m interested in edible and non-edible types as well as the trees they grow around. I find that mushrooms begin to pop up a lot more in the fall here. Would you like to see more of this theme? She reminds me so much of my goofy, rebellious, no BS friends, (and also a bit of myself with her love of miniatures.) Her perspective as woman is something that resonates with me so much in her art. Visiting her home felt like a pilgrimage. I had tears in my eyes. I admire her tenacity and grit, despite her tragedies and losses. I imagined how she would have looked out at the view of her garden while stuck in her bed. I hope that somehow while I visited, she watched me working from her window. #fridakahlo #pleinairpainting #stradaeasel #stradaeaselchallenge #stradaeaselday23

(Day 18) Pyramid of the Sun. Teotuhuacan Pyramids. (Day 18) Pyramid of the Sun. Teotuhuacan Pyramids. I chose a blood red underpainting for the pyramid referencing the original Hematite or Red Oxide that the Pyramid was once painted. The colours on the exterior have now faded away, but many are still visible especially on murals. Some of which were painted using Cinnabar, a pigment closely associated with toxic mercury. I noticed that even the pigment of the dirt in the parking lot was a red oxide colour, probably a rich resource in the area. Bits of the red show through in my painting as a reminder of the human sacrifices once taken place here. 🤘🌞 I love learning about the origins of pigments. #naturalpigments #winsornewton #stradaeasel #mexicocity

A stone carved disk of Mictlantecutli: a worshipped and feared god “associated with owls, spiders, bats, and South”. My subject feels appropriate, as I often contemplate existentialism and try to face my fears head on. I felt like it needed the life of Pthalo in his eyes. Don’t ask me how old this is. I have a terrible concept of time. #pthaloblue #teotihuacan #stradaeasel
